The Virginia Beach Convention Center is the centerpiece for a new district in the city. A home for special events and conventions, it also serves as a hub for information transfer. This 19th Street corridor will become a significant open space for Virginia Beach and serve as a public piazza during street closures. The landscape strategy for the convention center is “flexibility.” The parking, plaza, and promenade are designed as versatile spaces, which can be tented and used for multiple functions. Special paving adds visual interest to the plaza from a variety of levels. Water features invoke a sense of the tidal landscape by using native aquatic plantings and fish.
WPL was chosen to be the local associate landscape architectural firm and participated in all aspects of landscape design. In addition, we were 100% responsible for the implementation of the landscape design.
