The concept for the Laskin Gateway / 31 Ocean destination was born out of a design charette hosted by the Resort Advisory Commission in the summer of 1997. Originally planned as a one way pairing of new 30th street connector eastbound and a future 32nd street connector westbound, the ultimate plan was to reduce automobile traffic through 31st street to make the streetscape more pedestrian friendly. The goal was to slow traffic and encourage tourists and shoppers to walk west along 31st street to a shopping district similar to the way this area was in the 1950’s- 1960’s. WPL landscape architects participated in the design charrette and ultimately provided a complete 31 Ocean Master Plan depicting the over all build out to the Resort Advisory Commission and the Planning Department at the city.
Beginning in the Fall of 2007, WPL provided an updated master plan of the 31 Ocean Area showing the 32nd Street connector and Laskin Road in it ultimate configuration of two lanes with parallel parking for a new pedestrian shopping venue. The Strategic Action Plan was adopted by City Council on December 2, 2008.
The 31 Ocean Corridors has been an exceptionally positive impact on the Resort and continues to provide an up-scale shopping and entertainment venue for tourist and locals. Comprised of a beautiful four-star hotel, specialty shops and boutiques, restaurants, a scenic urban park venue featuring entertainment throughout the summer and shoulder seasons all within the Laskin Gateway/31 Ocean re-development area. This area has become a destination for tourists, conventioneers, and locals.
